Introduction
From my father using the word to seeing an exhibition featuring it in a museum, it can’t be ignored. The selfie. After studying its history and intoxicating nature over thirty days, I will constantly refer back to this exploration. Trends show the selfie is not going anywhere. The selfie is morphing into something bigger with platforms, techniques, and applications surrounding it evolving every day.
WTF is a Basic Bitch?
The stereotype basic bitch has its characteristics such as black leggings, fleece, pumpkin spice lattes, and any mainstream fashion trend at the time. What is the real danger of being basic? The term basic points to some heavy-hitting subjects including identity, conformity, and privilege. As with any slippery slope in social impact, it’s far too late before we notice what is going on.
Maybe at first glance, you felt like you don’t measure up in life? In my article about selfies, I explained this was the first time in history; we are in direct control of our image. With this control, we tend only to share photos of our greatest moments, best side, perfectionist health habits, beautiful places we visit, and of course, when our butt looks great. The idealized view has shown to be problematic when we start to have negative effects such as anxiety, changing daily behaviors, or have trouble living an authentic life.
